Synopsis

ENGLISH

When a small group of teenagers sit outside the Swedish parliament with handwritten placards demanding climate action, they ignite what will become one of the largest youth movements of modern times. Over seven years of filming, the documentary follows Greta, Isabelle, Sophia, Andreas, Anton, Ell, Simon and several others as they grow up with demonstrations, negotiations and political storms.

As we burn is the previously untold story of the collective that started the youth-led climate movement – Fridays for Future.

SVENSKA

DIRECTOR’S BIO

Helena Molin

Helena has a BA in social work and a MA in social policies and worked as a children’s counsellor in a hospital and a child investigator in the social services before she started making films. She has also worked as a DJ and ran queer clubs in Stockholm. Helena studied documentary film at Biskops Arnö and in 2019 her short “With Care” screened at the Umeå International Film Festival. Her films are characterized by a directness in the encounter with the people she films, while at the same time often being strongly coloured by a personal humorous tone.

Director’s comment: “The process of making “Strejkarna/As We Burn” started seven years ago as she questioned the media’s portrayal of Greta Thunberg as the lonely climate striker, since this was never a reality shared by neither Greta herself or the other activists she met during the climate strikes. With a profound belief in that change comes from collective strength, a close collaboration with the young activists took it’s start, resulting in a portrayal of a grassroots movement from within – the relations that hold it together and the forces from outside that brake down the individuals inside it.”

About Elvin Landaeus Csizmadia:
Elvin decided early on to dedicate his life to climate activism, and has since co-founded a number of projects: School strikers in Lund 2019, a group for full-time activists in Extinction Rebellion 2021, Take Back the Future 2022 and most recently the Nordic Climate Justice Coalition 2024.
